Injectable collagen biostimulators: Sculptra, Juvelook & Lenisna

A dermal filler replaces lost volume by injecting hyaluronic acid gel directly into the skin. A biostimulator works differently: it triggers the body’s own collagen-producing cells to generate new collagen over time. The results are more gradual but tend to look very natural, improve the skin’s quality and structure rather than simply adding bulk, and can last considerably longer than most traditional fillers.

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible, biodegradable material with a long history of safe use in medical settings. When injected into the deep dermis or subcutaneous tissue, it creates a controlled response that stimulates collagen and elastin production. Volume is restored gradually as new collagen develops, with results that typically last up to two years. Sculptra is particularly effective for broader facial volume restoration and deeper structural changes.

Juvelook and Lenisna contain poly-D-L-lactic acid (PDLLA) combined with hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid provides an immediate hydrating effect following treatment, while the PDLLA stimulates collagen progressively. Unlike Sculptra, Juvelook and Lenisna do not require post-treatment massage, and their molecular structure is designed to reduce the likelihood of complications. Juvelook is better suited to surface-level concerns such as fine lines, texture, and delicate areas like the under-eyes, while Lenisna provides more structural support for early sagging or volume changes.

Sculptra is most commonly used for broader volumisation of the mid-face, cheeks, temples and jawline, as well as the body. Juvelook and Lenisna are highly versatile and can address under-eye hollowing, fine lines, early wrinkles, loss of elasticity, crepey or uneven skin texture, and early contour changes around the cheeks or jawline – on the face, neck and hands.

This depends on the treatment and the degree of change being addressed. Sculptra typically requires two to three sessions for full facial rejuvenation. Juvelook and Lenisna most commonly require two to three sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart, with maintenance usually needed only once every twelve to twenty-four months, depending on age, lifestyle and individual skin condition.

With all three treatments, results develop gradually as new collagen is produced. An initial fresher, more hydrated appearance may be noticeable within a few weeks, with the main collagen-stimulating results typically visible two to three months after treatment. This gradual progression is part of what makes biostimulators look so natural.

A topical anaesthetic is applied before treatment to minimise discomfort. Mild swelling, redness or bruising at the injection sites is common and generally resolves within a few days. Most patients return to normal activities on the same day. A thorough consultation will be carried out beforehand to assess suitability and discuss any individual considerations.

Unlike Sculptra, Juvelook and Lenisna can be dissolved if necessary, which is an important distinction for patients wanting reassurance about flexibility and reversibility. Sculptra results, while gradual and natural-looking, are not reversible in the same way.
