Rapid Weight Loss Changes to Skin & Face

Significant weight loss is a life-changing achievement – but it can bring aesthetic changes that feel unexpected and, at times, unwelcome.

Whether you have lost weight through lifestyle changes, bariatric surgery, or the growing use of GLP-1s such as Ozempic (semaglutide) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide), the impact on your face and body can be profound.

For some patients, the face can age significantly in a short period, even as the body looks slimmer and they feel much healthier, which can be distressing.

What happens to your face and body during rapid weight loss?

When the body sheds weight quickly, fat loss is not confined to the areas we would choose. The face is particularly susceptible because facial fat pads – the clusters of fat that give the cheeks their fullness, the under-eye area its smoothness, and the jawline its definition – deplete at the same rate as fat elsewhere.

At the same time, the skin, which has been supported by underlying fat for years, may lose some of its elasticity and struggle to contract fully as the fat beneath it diminishes.

What changes am I likely to see?

The result can be a combination of the following changes: hollowing in the cheeks, temples and under-eye area; looser skin along the jawline and neck; increased visibility of fine lines and wrinkles; and a general loss of the youthful structural balance that underpins a healthy, rested appearance.

Body changes following rapid weight loss may include skin laxity on the abdomen, inner thighs, upper arms, and chest, where skin that was stretched over a larger frame has less natural resilience to retract. This is particularly common when weight loss is rapid, as the skin has less time to adapt gradually.

Jowling after rapid Weight Loss

How we can help at Hardwick Clinic

At Hardwick Clinic, we take a holistic, doctor-led approach to the aesthetic changes that accompany weight loss. Dr Tatyana Lapa-Enright will assess your skin quality, facial volume and body concerns in detail before recommending a personalised treatment plan.

Our goal is always to restore proportion and support your natural anatomy – not to add volume indiscriminately, but to work with the structure of your face and body to achieve results that look and feel right for you.

Ozempic Face FAQs

Will my face look gaunt after taking GLP-1 weight loss medication?

Not necessarily, but some patients do experience significant facial volume loss, sometimes referred to as ‘Ozempic face’ or ‘Mounjaro face’. The degree of change depends on how much weight is lost, how quickly, and individual factors such as age and skin elasticity. A consultation at Hardwick Clinic will allow us to assess your specific concerns and discuss options that restore balance naturally.

We can also offer advice on balancing nutrition to support both weight loss and your aesthetic results.

When should I consider treatment: before or after I have finished losing weight?

We generally recommend waiting until your weight has stabilised before beginning treatments such as Sculptra, as ongoing weight loss can alter the aesthetic context of the treatment. However, certain skin quality treatments, such as Morpheus8, can be considered earlier to support the skin during the weight loss journey. We will advise you individually at the consultation.

Can these treatments address body skin laxity as well as the face?

Yes. Morpheus8 can be used across the body to improve skin laxity on the abdomen, arms, thighs, and other areas. We will review your concerns in full and, if needed, develop a plan to address both facial and body changes.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

This varies depending on the degree of change and the treatment chosen. Sculptra typically requires a course of two to four sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart. Morpheus8 and HIFU are often performed as a series. During your consultation, Dr Lapa-Enright will outline a realistic treatment plan and timeline.

Sculptra

Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) biostimulator that works by stimulating your own collagen production gradually over several weeks and months. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, Sculptra rebuilds the structural framework beneath the skin rather than simply replacing lost volume.

For patients who have experienced facial depletion following GLP-1 treatment or significant weight loss, Sculptra offers a progressive, natural-looking restoration of the cheeks, temples and jawline. Results develop over time and can last up to two years.

Juvelook & Lesina

Similar to Sculptra, Juvelook & Lesina are highly effective biostimulators that can treat skin laxity, accordion lines, and facial and body volume loss following rapid weight loss. They work by stimulating the body’s own collagen production, rather than just acting as a temporary filler.

Skin boosters

We offer a range of skin boosters, including Profhilo, which addresses skin laxity as a result of rapid weight loss. By stimulating collagen and elastin production, our treatments enhance your skin’s natural elasticity, helping to repair damage.

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)

HIFU uses precisely targeted ultrasound energy to tighten and lift the skin from within by stimulating collagen at deeper tissue layers. It is particularly effective for addressing skin laxity along the jawline, neck and brow following weight loss. HIFU requires no downtime and works progressively over three to six months as collagen production improves.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 combines radiofrequency energy with micro-needling to remodel and tighten both the skin and the underlying adipose tissue. It is one of our most versatile treatments for post-weight-loss skin concerns, addressing both laxity and texture on the face, neck, jowls and body. It stimulates collagen and elastin, improving skin quality, firmness and tone where the skin has become loose or crepey
