Facial redness

Facial redness is a common skin concern that can range from occasional flushing to persistent redness affecting comfort, confidence, and skin health. It may be temporary or long-standing and can have both cosmetic and medical causes.

At Hardwick Clinic, we take a careful, medical-led approach to facial redness, focusing on accurate assessment, appropriate diagnosis, and long-term management where required.

Common causes of facial redness

Facial redness can arise from a variety of factors, including increased skin sensitivity and inflammation, vascular changes within the skin, external triggers such as heat, stress, alcohol, spicy foods or exercise, and inappropriate or overly aggressive skincare.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition and one of the most common causes of persistent facial redness in adults. It typically affects the central face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead.

Rosacea may present with persistent redness and flushing and is often associated with visible superficial blood vessels (telangiectasia or spider veins), skin sensitivity, burning or stinging sensations, and, in some cases, inflammatory spots. Symptoms can fluctuate over time and usually require long-term management rather than one-off treatment.

Management may include targeted skincare, medical topical treatments, and, where appropriate, light-based treatments such as IPL / Lumecca, which can help reduce background redness and visible blood vessels, alongside ongoing skin barrier support.

Skin irritation and dermatitis

Facial redness may also result from skin irritation, commonly caused by inappropriate skincare, over-exfoliation, or incorrect product use. When the skin barrier is disrupted, redness, sensitivity, and inflammation can worsen.

In more severe or prolonged cases, this may lead to dermatitis, presenting with redness, dryness, itching, and discomfort, and requiring targeted medical-grade skin barrier repair.

Medical causes of facial flushing

There are significant medical conditions that can cause facial flushing and redness, which are not cosmetic in nature. These require appropriate medical attention and investigation to identify and manage any underlying systemic cause.

Assessment and Care at Hardwick Clinic

We offer a free initial consultation and a personalised skincare review to identify triggers and contributing factors to facial redness, flushing, and visible spider veins (telangiectasia). Many causes of facial redness are chronic or long-standing and benefit from a structured, long-term management plan with regular review.

Where appropriate, we work closely with local healthcare practitioners and regularly refer to trusted colleagues, including dermatologists and plastic surgeons, to ensure patients receive the most appropriate care.

Our clinical approach is informed by research experience in the skin microbiome, which is increasingly recognised as playing a role in inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea. This understanding is integrated into everyday clinical practice.

Skincare

We offer a comprehensive range of bespoke skincare regimes. These do not have to be complicated, but you have to be committed to one.
