How to Treat Ozempic Face – or Mounjaro Face!

If you have been using a GLP-1 weight loss medication such as Ozempic or Mounjaro, you may have noticed some changes in the mirror that feel a little unexpected. You’ve worked hard. You feel healthier. But your face? It looks a little hollower than before. A little more tired. Perhaps a little older.

This phenomenon has gained so much attention that it now has its own names: Ozempic face or Mounjaro face. And while those terms might sound dramatic, the physical reality behind them is real, and it’s something I see increasingly at the clinic.

Why does it happen?

GLP-1 receptor agonists work by suppressing appetite and slowing gastric emptying, leading to sustained reductions in calorie intake and, for many people, significant weight loss. The medication doesn’t discriminate when it comes to where that weight comes from – and neither does the body. Fat loss affects the whole person, including the face.

The face relies on a series of fat compartments, known as fat pads, to maintain its shape and youthful proportions. As these deplete, the cheeks can appear sunken, the under-eye hollows become more pronounced, the temples can look gaunt, and skin that was previously supported by underlying fat may begin to sag along the jawline and neck. When weight loss is rapid – as it can be with GLP-1 medications – the skin has very little time to adapt. The result can be a face that looks older and more tired than you feel inside.

Can you treat Ozempic face?

Absolutely, and there are some excellent options available at Hardwick Clinic that are particularly well-suited to the changes that GLP-1 medications can bring.

Sculptra is one of my first recommendations for patients who have experienced significant facial volume loss after weight loss. Rather than replacing fat with a filler, Sculptra stimulates your own collagen production deep within the skin.

Over a series of sessions, it helps to rebuild the structural foundation that has been lost and the result is gradual, natural and long-lasting. For patients who have experienced a degree of ‘deflation’ across the cheeks, temples or mid-face, Sculptra offers a beautifully integrated result that doesn’t look treated.

Morpheus8 is another powerful option. This combination of radiofrequency and micro-needling works at both the skin and the deeper tissue level, stimulating collagen and elastin while tightening lax skin. It is particularly effective for the jawline, jowls and neck, where weight loss often leaves skin looking loose or crepey. It also has excellent applications for the body, making it a versatile choice for patients with skin laxity after weight loss.

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a non-invasive lifting treatment that delivers energy to deep tissue layers to stimulate collagen regeneration. It works from the inside out, improving the firmness and contour of the face and neck progressively over several months. For patients who are not yet ready for more intensive treatments, or who want to maintain results alongside ongoing management, HIFU can be a wonderful addition to a treatment plan.

Is it possible to prevent Ozempic face?

This is a question I hear more often, particularly from patients about to start GLP-1 treatment who want to be proactive. The honest answer is that you cannot entirely prevent the facial changes that come with significant weight loss – but you can absolutely minimise them, and in many cases, you can keep your skin looking remarkably well throughout the process.

Advice from Dr Tatyana Lapa-Enright

Here is my guidance for anyone starting GLP-1 therapy.

Lose weight steadily if you can

Rapid weight loss is harder on the skin than gradual loss. If your clinical team is monitoring your GLP-1 dosage, discuss whether a more measured approach would better align with your goals. The slower the loss, the more time the skin has to adapt.

Balancing of nutrition is essential to support both weight loss and your aesthetic results.

Prioritise protein

GLP-1 medications suppress appetite, which can make it challenging to eat enough protein. Protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass and supporting skin integrity. Aim for a protein-rich diet throughout your weight-loss journey — lean meats, eggs, dairy, legumes, and protein supplementation when needed. Loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) alongside fat loss accelerates the aged, hollow appearance — protein helps to protect against this.

Stay well hydrated and support your skin from within

Hydrated skin is more resilient and elastic. Alongside good water intake, consider a collagen supplement and ensure your diet is rich in vitamin C, zinc and antioxidants, all of which support the skin’s structural proteins. Omega-3 fatty acids (found in oily fish and quality supplements) also support skin barrier function and help to maintain a healthy, plump appearance.

Consider starting Sculptra or skin treatments early

This is perhaps the most impactful preventative step. Starting Sculptra treatment as you begin your weight-loss journey means you are building collagen while losing fat. The structural scaffolding that Sculptra creates can help to cushion the visual impact of fat loss, keeping facial proportions balanced and supported as the weight comes off.

Similarly, a course of Morpheus8 or HIFU can improve skin quality and elasticity before and during treatment, making the skin more resilient to future changes.

Use medical-grade skincare

A good skincare routine won’t replace clinical treatment, but it will support it. We recommend a retinoid, vitamin C serum, and SPF as a minimum. These ingredients work to support collagen production and protect the skin from environmental damage. We are happy to advise on the right products for your skin type at the consultation.

The bottom line

Ozempic face and Mounjaro face are real, but they are not inevitable and certainly not permanent. With the right treatment plan and a proactive approach, you can lose weight and look radiant while doing it. At Hardwick Clinic, we work with patients at every stage of the weight loss journey – from prevention to restoration – and we would love to support you too.
