Treatment of Migraine with Botox

BOTOX® has been a treatment option for the prophylaxis of headaches in adults with chronic migraine for over 30 years.

  • It is estimated that 190,000 migraine attacks are experienced every day in the UK
  • Migraine affects approximately 23.3% of adults in the UK, with a higher prevalence in females than in males

Chronic Migraine is defined as headaches on at least 15 days per month of which at least 8 days are with migraine.

Migraine is a medical diagnosis which can overlap with other types of headaches for which BOTOX® is not an effective treatment. Therefore at Hardwick Clinic you will be carefully assess to determine whether this is the right treatment for you.

BOTOX® is a proven treatment for preventing attacks of migraine. It believed that it works directly on the nerves that cause the headache. The effect of treatment last for 3 – 4 month month.

Evidence has shown that:

  • In clinical trials, patients were given up to five courses of injections of Botox into specific head and neck muscles every 12 weeks.
  • After 24 weeks, those treated with Botox had fewer days with migraine than those who received a placebo injection.
  • By one year, nearly 70% of those treated with Botox had a 50% reduction in the number of migraines compared with before the trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any side effects with this treatment?

Fewer than one in ten patients experience one or more of the following side effects:

  • Worsening migraine. This can begin within a day or two of the injections and usually lasts just a few days.
  • Rash, itching
  • Drooping of eyebrows or eye lids. This can begin after a couple or a few weeks and may last for a few weeks.
  • Muscle weakness, pain, cramp or tightness
  • Weakness and pain in the neck. This can begin after a couple of weeks and may last for a few weeks. It can usually be treated with regular naproxen (see above).
  • Fewer than one person in 100 may experience:

    • Difficulty in swallowing
    • Skin pain
    • Jaw pain
    • Swollen eyelid(s)

Are there any contraindication to treatment with botox

  • Pregnancy or breast feeding
  • Allergy to sensitivity to botox
  • Myopathy
  • Neuromuscular disorders
